The chronology of private spaceflight initiatives over the past decade includes the following key events:
8 December 2010
The first successful launch and recovery from orbit of Dragon – privately developed and operated spacecraft. It was launched by SpaceX – the U.S. aerospace manufacturer (and currently space transportation services company) located in Hawthorne, California.
October 2012
Dragon began regular cargo flights to the International Space Station under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services program.
23 October 2014
Successful launch of the first commercial payload sent to the Moon – Manfred Memorial Moon Mission (4M) by LuxSpace, a private European aerospace contractor based in Betzdorf, Luxembourg.
23 November 2015
The first successful launch of a VTVL (vertical takeoff, vertical landing) rocket from space to land on Earth – New Shepard 2 by Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos and headquartered in Kent, Washington.
25 November 2015
The U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act (also known as the Spurring Private Aerospace Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship Act) signed by President Barack Obama. This act de facto codified the ability of private American companies to own material resources extracted in outer space.
August 2016
GalacticSky developed and patented by Vector Launch Inc. (formerly Vector Space Systems). Headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, GalacticSky combines cutting-edge computing hardware with a software-defined satellite operating system, GalacticOS, which also includes a smart cloud-computing layer. GalacticSky allows customers to quickly test and run through a GUI or set of REST APIs software apps for scheduling, deploying, monitoring and managing resources for microsatellites.

Successful sub-orbital rocket flight with landing of a spent booster; the fifth and final launch and landing of Blue Origin’s New Shepard 2.
13 July 2017
The Space Mining Law is passed and adopted by the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies as part of the Space Resources initiative. The law guaranteed companies the right to own resources extracted in mining operations beyond Earth, thus making Luxembourg the first European country to do so.

The first time a rocket entered low earth orbit carrying three CubeSats after successful launch from a privately owned and operated spaceport – Mahia Launch Center, located in Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand. The Electron rocket was developed by American aerospace manufacturer and launch service provider Rocket Lab, founded in New Zealand and headquartered in Huntington Beach, California since 2013.
11 April 2019
The first paid commercial communications satellite – Arabsat-6A for Saudi Arabia – was successfully delivered as payload to orbit by Falcon Heavy, 27-engine SpaceX’s heavy-lift launch vehicle, designed and manufactured by SpaceX (maiden flight – 6 February 2018).
30 March 2021
Scheduled launch date for the new orbital telescope, James Webb. The telescope will be delivered to orbit by Ariane 5 – European heavy-lift expendable launch vehicle. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been developed with international collaboration between 17 (!) countries led by NASA and significant contributions from the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. Planned to be the successor to the famous Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb astronomical observatory exceeds the latter in such parameters as resolution and sensivity.
2026
Estimated launch date for Dragonfly, NASA’s mission spacecraft that will deliver a mobile robotic rotorcraft lander to Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, with payload for scientific purposes (mass, gamma-ray, and neutron spectrometry, meteorology etc.).
2034
Expected landing date for the Dragonfly rotorcraft on a dark dune field region of icy Titan called Shangri-La. Dragonfly will then explore Titan’s dense atmosphere, organic dunes, subsurface ocean and liquid reservoirs, and the floor of an impact crater searching for chemical signs of past or extant life.
2040-2060s
Estimated timeframe for crewed spaceflights to Mars, as proposed by Chinese and Russian space exploration initiatives.
